Dental implants are the best way to restore missing teeth permanently. Implants can be used to restore a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even a full arch of missing teeth. They will look completely natural, are extremely durable, and last 30+ years with proper care. At Waibel Dental in Ambler, Dr. Lana Waibel specializes in placing and restoring dental implants. Schedule a consultation today to see if you’re a candidate.
Length of treatment varies
The process begins with an initial consultation. Dr. Waibel will examine your mouth, take digital images and scans of your facial structure, and determine if you’re a good candidate for oral surgery and dental implants. Dr. Waibel has advanced training in the placement of dental implants and understands what treatments are best for patients in different states of oral health. If Dr. Waibel thinks dental implants would successfully replace your missing teeth, she will develop a custom implant placement plan.
Dental implants are made of two basic parts: a crown and a post. The posts are titanium rods which function like an artificial tooth root. Titanium is used because this metal is able to bond permanently to your jaw bone through a process called osseointegration.
Before beginning surgery, Dr. Waibel will clean and numb your mouth. She’ll place the post in the area where your missing tooth used to be. After placement, you will be given several months to heal and for osseointegration to take place, allowing the implant to become a natural part of your mouth.
Once your implant has been placed, your mouth will need to heal for about 3-6 months. During this time, you’ll come in for a few follow-up appointments so Dr. Waibel can check your mouth and ensure that you’re healing properly.
Once your gums have healed, she will take images and scans of your mouth. Then, she’ll work with an outside dental lab to create your implant-supported restoration. This is the prosthetic tooth that will replace your missing tooth. The most common type of restoration is a dental crown, which is attached to the post to replace a single missing tooth. However, implant-supported bridges and dentures can also be used to restore multiple missing teeth, or even a full arch of teeth.
After your restoration has been manufactured and properly fitted, it will be attached to your implant, restoring your smile and your bite. It will look and feel completely natural. With proper care, your new tooth will last for decades.
After tooth loss, your underlying jaw bone will no longer be stimulated by the pressure of biting and chewing. This can result in “bone resorption.” The bone will deteriorate over time, often resulting in the loss of as much as 25% of jaw bone mass within 1 year of tooth loss.
If your jaw bone is not strong enough to accommodate an implant, a bone graft may be required before we can proceed with treatment. Dr. Waibel will add bone tissue to the affected area. Over the next few months, the jaw bone will heal around graft, creating new jaw bone material and strengthening the area in preparation for dental implant placement.
